How to get to Dirk Hartog Island
The Island Barge “Hartog Explorer”
A landing barge is available to transfer 4WD vehicles from Steep Point to Dirk Hartog Island. This is a must do, unique experience for all adventure seekers searching for an ‘off grid’ back to nature holiday that gives you the freedom to explore the islands natural wonders at your own pace. The island barge carries one vehicle and a trailer at a time and takes approximately 15 minutes to cross the waters of South Passage.
Barge Information
4WD & trailer must not exceed combined length of 10.6m
Trucks are not allowed due to height & size.
The barge operates daily from Shelter Bay, Steep Point.
Open: March 1st – November 30th
Operates: 7am – 10am subject to change due to weather conditions. Our team will inform you if there are going to be any delays due to weather.
Check in: Please arrive at barge landing 30 minutes prior to departure

By Air – Your Plane or Charter Flight
A light aircraft can be arranged to transfer passengers direct from Monkey Mia Airport to Dirk Hartog Island airstrip with Shark Bay Aviation. Flight time is approximately 20 minutes. There are several planes with varying capacity depending on your needs.

By Boat
Boat transfers ex Denham to Homestead Bay, Dirk Hartog Island are included when staying at the Eco Lodge. Travel time: approx 1 hour | Departure Time: 2pm from the Denham commercial jetty unless otherwise arranged. Please be on the jetty at 1:30pm to load luggage. You can store your vehicles at a secure location once loaded.
